Six Epochs of Modem History

The modem did not appear overnight. It emerged from a century and a half of ideas about how to send information across a distance — from the clicking of telegraph keys to the invisible handshakes of 5G radio. Each era built on the last, pushed by engineers, military needs, hobbyists, and the simple desire to communicate faster.

1837–1950

Epoch I — Telegraph, Theory & the First Signals

Long before the word "modem" existed, engineers were solving the same fundamental problem: how to encode information as an electrical signal and send it reliably over a wire. The telegraph, the telephone, the teletype, and the first military data links all laid the groundwork. This is also where the theory begins — Harry Nyquist in 1928, Claude Shannon in 1948 — two mathematicians who defined the absolute limits of any communication channel, limits that every modem ever built has tried to approach.

1950–1980

Epoch II — Birth of the Modem

The word "modem" — short for modulator-demodulator — entered the engineering vocabulary in the late 1950s. The U.S. Air Force needed to send radar data across the country over ordinary telephone lines. What they built, the Bell 101 and its successor the Bell 103, became the template for everything that followed. Acoustic couplers let anyone connect a computer to a phone handset. By the end of this era, modems were a real product, 300 baud, slow by any future standard, but revolutionary.

1980–1996

Epoch III — The PC Era & the BBS Culture

The Hayes Smartmodem of 1981 changed everything. For the first time, a modem could be controlled by software using a simple command set — the AT commands — that became an industry standard overnight. Speeds climbed from 1200 to 2400, then 9600, then 14400, then 33600 bits per second. Bulletin Board Systems (BBS) flourished: thousands of independently run servers where hobbyists exchanged files, played games, and argued about everything. This was the internet before the internet.

1996–2000

Epoch IV — Peak Dial-up: 56k & the End of an Era

By the mid-1990s, dial-up had reached what many engineers believed was a hard physical ceiling. Then two companies — US Robotics with X2 and Rockwell with K56flex — independently discovered a clever asymmetric trick that pushed downstream speeds to 56 kilobits per second, defying the expected limit. The standards war was eventually resolved by the ITU's V.90 in 1998, followed by V.92. Tens of millions of households dialled in every day. And then, quietly, broadband arrived and it was all over within a few years.

2000–2010

Epoch V — Broadband Revolution

ADSL proved that the copper wire already running into every home was capable of far more than dial-up had ever used. By exploiting higher frequencies above the voice band, DSL modems delivered speeds measured in megabits. Cable companies deployed DOCSIS modems over their coaxial networks. VDSL and fibre pushed speeds further still. The experience of going online changed completely: always-on, no dialling, no waiting, no engaged tone. The modem became invisible infrastructure, hidden in a router under the desk.

2000–today

Epoch VI — Mobile Modems & the Wireless World

In parallel with the broadband revolution, mobile networks were quietly becoming data networks. GPRS (2000) delivered a trickle of data over GSM. EDGE improved on it. Then 3G brought real mobile internet, and HSPA pushed it to desktop-like speeds. The USB dongle — a modem the size of a thumb drive — became a common sight. 4G LTE redefined what "fast" meant. Today, 5G modems are embedded in laptops, cars, factories, and medical devices. The modem is everywhere and nowhere — invisible, essential, and still governed by the same principles Nyquist wrote down in 1928.
